火星冰河 曾有生命存在

太空探測又有重大進展，美國科學家宣稱在火星新發現巨大冰河，可能是億萬年前的冰河遺跡，不但證明火星水源豐富，可能曾有生命存在，未來還可能藉此了解火星氣候變化的歷史。

繞著火星軌道飛行的「火星偵查軌道號」（Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter，MRO）利用探地雷達，發現火星南緯30度到60度之間的赫拉斯盆地的山嶺，其實是被岩石覆蓋的巨大冰層，其中最大的冰塊長96公里、寬 20公里，面積超過7個台北市，估計冰層厚度也有1公里以上，推測火星表面曾有三分之一是海洋，一億至兩億年前，火星進入冰河期，大冰層就在那時形成，因 被岩石地形覆蓋，所以沒有蒸發。

今年6月間無人探測器「鳳凰號」發現火星兩極有冰，而最新的發現則證明火星的低緯度地區也有水源，學者指出人類日後登陸火星可望利用冰層的水源與能源，還可鑽探冰層，研究億萬年前的水中是否曾有微生物，更可從冰層氣泡中取得遠古的氣候資料，解開更多關於火星的謎團。
